This itinerary assumes arrival at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).

Day 1: Arrival in Negombo & Coastal Charm

Upon arrival, head to Negombo, a vibrant fishing town close to the airport. It’s a perfect place to relax after your flight. Explore the lively fish market, stroll along the beach, and enjoy your first taste of Sri Lankan cuisine.

Day 2: Ancient City of Anuradhapura & Sacred History

Journey to Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the vast archaeological park, home to giant dagobas (stupas), ancient palaces, and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to be a sapling from the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Dambulla Cave Temple

Head towards Sigiriya. In the morning, climb the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an ancient palace and fortress complex with stunning frescoes and panoramic views from the summit. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a series of five caves adorned with beautiful Buddha statues and murals.

Day 4: Minneriya National Park Safari & Polonnaruwa

Start your day with an exciting safari at Minneriya National Park, famous for its “Gathering” of elephants (best seen between July and October). Later, explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO site, featuring well-preserved ruins of stupas, statues, and royal palaces.

Day 5: Kandy – Cultural Heart

Travel to Kandy, the last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. Visit the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses a relic of the Buddha’s tooth. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kandy cultural dance performance.

Day 6: Ella – Scenic Train Journey & Hill Country Beauty

Take one of the world’s most scenic train rides from Kandy (or a nearby station like Nanu Oya) to Ella. This journey offers breathtaking views of tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, and lush valleys. In Ella, hike to Little Adam’s Peak for sunset views or visit the Nine Arch Bridge.

Day 7: Yala National Park – Wildlife Adventure

Head south to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife sanctuary. Embark on an afternoon jeep safari in search of leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a myriad of bird species.

Day 8: Mirissa – Whale Watching & Coastal Relaxation

Continue to the southern coast and the beautiful beach town of Mirissa. In the morning (season dependent, usually November to April), go whale and dolphin watching. The rest of the day is for relaxing on the beach, enjoying fresh seafood, or trying some surfing.

Day 9: Galle Fort & South Coast Beaches

Travel west along the coast to the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore its charming cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, boutiques, and cafes. Spend the afternoon relaxing at one of the nearby pristine beaches like Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa.
